The best free resources for boat buyers and sellers

"Who do you use for yacht insurance? Who do you use for financing? How do I find a marine surveyor? What about a delivery captain?" We get asked these four questions more than almost anything else. While most brokers keep that list to themselves, because twenty years of relationships is the job, we share it all with you. For free.

In this episode Maryline Bossar and Amanda Haley walk you through every free resource they've built for boat buyers and sellers, starting with a vetted, owner-reviewed Marine Directory of surveyors, insurance and finance contacts, delivery captains, riggers, canvas makers, divers, CPAs and charter managers, searchable by region. No charge, no obligation, and you don't have to work with us to use any of it.

⚓️ Work with Current Yachts!

⛵ Everything shown in this episode is free on the Current Yachts website — Marine Directory, downloads, seller calculator, listing builder. No obligation to work with us.

💬 In the comments: what's the one resource you wish somebody had handed you before you bought your first boat? And what should we build next; we read every one of these.

In this episode:

✔️ THE MARINE DIRECTORY: searchable by category and by region (Northeast, Southeast, Caribbean and beyond), with reviews written by other verified account holders, not by us. Free account to see full contact details; ID verification is only required if you go on to sign an agreement with Current Yachts. Important: these are suggestions, not endorsements. Do your own due diligence; and on surveyors especially, choose your own. More on that below.

✔️ FREE DOWNLOADS; checklists and spreadsheets, including the boat shopping comparison sheet Amanda uses with clients to put three boats side by side with pros and cons written out. There's no boat with every feature you want; the comparison sheet is how you decide what you're willing to trade. Also in there: a spare parts list from Captain Chris, and a new-boat essentials list from John Schaefer at Ministry of Sailing.

✔️ THE PODCAST + VIDEO LIBRARY; every Full Displacement episode and every education video, browsable by topic. Searching the Marine Directory for a term like "lithium" will surface both the contact and the episode we recorded with them.

✔️ BUILD YOUR LISTING ONLINE; as far as we know, no other brokerage lets a seller build a complete listing themselves, online, start to finish. Upload your ownership document to pre-populate the fields (which also verifies you're the rightful owner), add equipment and propulsion, write your description, and price it against low/medium/high guidance drawn from comparable sales. Save and come back to it. When you submit, we review it, and on approval it goes to YachtWorld at the click of a button, with Boat Trader, YachtWay and Yatco to follow.

✔️ THE SELLER DISCLOSURE; most listing agreements handle damage history with a single yes/no checkbox. Ours asks the specific questions: lightning strike, grounding, collision, sinking, structural repair. Then we disclose it to anyone who asks about the boat. This is voluntary best practice in yacht sales, not a legal requirement — which is exactly why we think it matters.

✔️ WHAT IT ACTUALLY COSTS TO SELL; traditional brokerage runs 8–10% of the sale price. Current Yachts charges $1,500 up front for listing and promotion, media services priced separately (and you keep the photos, video and reels to use however you like), and a fixed selling expense at closing. On the $750,000 example in this video, that's roughly $12,000 saved with a co-broker involved — and about $42,000 saved when we procure the buyer ourselves, which happens in roughly half of transactions. Run your own numbers in the seller calculator.

✔️ FOR BUYERS; save your search criteria, generate and sign a buyer-broker representation agreement online, and filter by the things the big MLS sites won't let you filter by: multihull vs. monohull under power, drive type (straight shaft vs. IPS pod), number of cabins.

A NOTE ON CHOOSING A SURVEYOR: Because we're handing you a list of them: the standard advice — ours included — is that the buyer picks the surveyor, not the broker and not the seller. Look for SAMS or NAMS accreditation, ask for a sample report and references, ask whether they do both power and sail, and attend the survey yourself if you possibly can. Our directory exists so you have somewhere to start and can read what other owners said. It is not a substitute for choosing your own.
